The lore

Twenty yearsof internet folklore.

Madison Avenue kid. MySpace original. Major Lazer’s social director, a Mad Decent artist, the owner of New York’s biggest cat, and now an AI hyper-creative with an empire to run. Here’s how it happened, receipts included.

01The early days

Madison Avenue kid

Raised around the ad world through family ties to BBDO and DDB, he studied media arts, photography and animation at The Evergreen State College, then took an Associate of Arts in Music Entertainment Management & Audio Engineering at the Art Institute of Atlanta.

02Early 2000s

Splurt is born

Back in Sweden after 9/11, he created the artist persona “Splurt”, performing in New York and across Europe and charting in Finland along the way.

03The 2000s

Brooklyn & the early web

A Brooklyn MySpace original: posting, remixing and meme-making years before “creator” was a job title, and learning exactly how things spread online.

Peter Max Studio

Five years as creative director and digital media assistant to the legendary pop artist: photography, exhibitions, digital media and animation concepts. An education in making art impossible to ignore.

Major Lazer

Diplo’s camp noticed his graphics (he’d designed “Major Lazer dollars”) and handed him the keys as Social Media Director. On his watch the audience grew from ~15K to 1M+ through “Free the Universe”, “Peace Is the Mission” and the “Lean On” era: a billion YouTube views by January 2016 and, for a stretch, Spotify’s most-streamed song ever.

He landed brand partnerships with Rovio (Angry Birds), GQ and FOX ADHD, and got animated into FXX’s Major Lazer series with a segment called “Protect The Splurt”.

#OMW2SYG

He turned “On My Way 2 Steal Your Girl” into an Instagram movement that Taco Bell, Trident, Harley-Davidson, Fiat and The Simpsons ran with. Mad Decent released the single “#OMW2SYG (Swiggity Swooty)” on October 28, 2014. It reached #18 on the global iTunes Dance chart, and the video landed in 2015 with a cameo from The Fat Jew.

King Samson

Samson, a Maine Coon the internet knew as Catstradamus, joined the family in 2014. In 2016 the press crowned the 28-pound, four-foot cat the biggest in New York: TODAY, ABC News, Inside Edition, the New York Post, PIX11, E! and outlets worldwide followed, for 1B+ global impressions and around 200 fan letters a day.

Samson passed in September 2022. His kingdom lives on as King Samson’s Dynasty: 204K strong and still growing.
